Finding that elusive new job

Thursday, December 24th, 2009

Sadly there seem to be more and more people searching for what often seems like an ever decreasing number of job openings. Which means that you need to put more work into your own job searching activities or perhaps consider self-employment as an alternative (though not an easy one these days).

With that being the situation, there are increasing numbers of jobsearch sites springing up such as Jacksonville job search. The problem with these is that they need a certain critical mass of job listings before they start to work for both employers and employees which in turn means that they generally can’t be too specialised either geographically or by job category.

It is nice to see that these sites are springing up but I’m not sure that the definitive site has yet appeared.

Safety first and last

Thursday, December 24th, 2009

One of the complications of modern life is that there are just so many safety signs around. You see them everywhere these days but often one wonders whether fewer signs and more common sense would be a better way to go.

Do we really need to be told that smoking is dangerous? Smokers just ignore the warnings and others don’t need to read them. And so it is in many areas.

In the commercial world, there you’ll find signs telling you that a safety harness is required for those going on site along with a whole host of warnings. Even a house renovation project will require its own little sign safety sign. Does that actually add anything to the safety on the site though? Somehow, I suspect that the answer is, at best, “very little”.

New computer but no backup?

Thursday, December 24th, 2009

With the plummeting price of technology I’m sure that many computers are sitting under Christmas trees right now.

How many of us even think about backing up our information though? After all, the disc is sure to fail at some time and thus take with it a fairly large chunk of our lives in many cases. Would you really not mind losing all those photos stored on your computer?

The snag is though that backup is a hassle to do and difficult to keep as a habit over the longer term. However, online backup is now quite a viable option for those hooked up to high speed Internet. You still have to set it up and it will take an age to run the first time, but once that initial bulk work is done it’s very much an automatic thing that you can basically forget about until the day that you need it. You can even get it free for smaller amounts of data and these days “small” is actually quite a lot of information.
