These days there seems to be an inordinate amount of stuff that we all cart about with us on vacation but have you thought about whether you have what you need and whether it’ll actually work?
For example, if you’re dependent on your mobile phone, have you checked that it’ll actually work in the countries that you’re going to? At the moment, the only phones that can be relied on to work pretty much worldwide are those that are quad band but the vast majority of phones are only dual band thus an American phone normally won’t work in Europe and vice versa plus neither will work in Japan. Even if it does work, it’s worth checking out what the call costs are as, usually, they are a LOT more than domestic calls plus there’s the charge per minute that you have for receiving calls overseas.
If you’re driving it’s handy to fit wind deflectors to cut down on the wind noise from open windows not to mention the bugs that fly in. In general, if you’re driving your own car you should have it checked out well in advance to avoid needing repairs whilst you’re off on vacation.
Taking your computer along? If you can downsize the little Acer Aspire One that I’m writing this on is just perfect for holiday trips. Just A5 in size and generally around half the price of the cheapest normal sized laptop. Get the big battery and you’re looking at over six hours between charges (though it does pretty much double the weight). OK, it’s not going to be as fast as your normal laptop but then you’re on vacation so you’ve time to spare.
Don’t forget adaptors and transformers too! Many electronic products operate on 230V and 110V but it’s best to check that in advance. On the whole Europe operates on 230V whilst America (north, south and central) operates on 110V but outside those regions the voltage can seem like potluck at times.
