Your own TV channels anywhere

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

We’re all used to being able to select from hundreds of channels when we’re at home but when we’re away it’s down to whatever channels are on offer from the local hotel or whatever.

However, these days it doesn’t have to be like that courtesy of a little gadget called a Slingbox. What this does is offer you up all the channels that you normally get at home but on your computer so you can get those channels pretty much anywhere.

This is such a brilliant little item that I’d say there’s a fair chance of the word getting adopted as a description for all such devices but, for now, there’s just the one as far as I know.

Speeding up the arrival of a trimmer me

Friday, January 16th, 2009

As we’re in the process of relocating, we’re trying to sort out how to correct the overeating and relaxed lifestyle that we’ve been enjoying over the last five years.

In an ideal world we’d have cut back on the eating ages ago and gotten going on a proper exercise programme a long time ago too. However, whilst we have cut back on the food intake, starting up the exercise programme isn’t quite as easy as we’d have liked.

Anyway, because of that we find ourselves in need of a jump start to the weightloss and are therefore considering the diet pills option. Although it might seem like a simple option it’s not these days with the massive range of diet pills available on the market: is it a fat burner that we need because we’re carrying around too much fat, or is it one of the metabolism enhancers because of the sedentary lifestyle, or both?

More research required I suspect :)

Is travel insurance really worth bothering with?

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

In most cases a general purpose travel insurance policy isn’t worth paying for simply because many of us these days have valuable items specifically insured under our home insurance and often you can find that all your possessions are covered when outside your home. Do check though as it ain’t always the case!

However, what can be worthwhile is a specific travel medical insurance policy. Depending on where you live, you might think that your normal medical insurance will cover you and that’s true but only up to a point. That particular point is usually repatriation which is a major league expense in some cases. Even on fairly short-haul flights within Europe you can be looking at thousands by the time you add in things like medical care during the flight, specialised equipment to be taken with you and, of course, you’re not going to be able to use a discount airline, are you?

Those not living in America also have to consider the potential expense of American medical care which tends to be a special extension to most medical insurance policies and is unlikely to be an option for most normal domestic policies. Even where it is an option you can find that the cover on offer is pitifully small in comparison to the bills that you could find yourself getting.

So, no for a general travel insurance policy, definitely yes for a travel medical insurance one.
